A post on the Algerian star's verified account said he was going to 'stay away from football' but doubts quickly surfaced over its authenticity.
Football ⚽ fans fear Riyad Mahrez has quit the game after a message appeared on his official Facebook page.
But there is confusion as to whether the Leicester City star has ended his career or if his page was simply hacked.
A post appeared on Mahrez’s account – which boasts more than a million followers – stating the 27-year-old will “stay away” from football.
The message read: “After the last consultation with many doctors, I’ve decided to stay away from football.
“As my time as a football player comes to an end, I would like to say few words.
“I want to thank everybody for the kindness and support they have shown me in this incredible city, you will be always in my heart.”
The message, if true, would be a bolt from the blue with the forward starring for the Foxes at the weekend.
Algerian Mahrez scored a late free-kick to earn Claude Puel’s side a draw at home to Bournemouth.
He also appeared in training earlier on Tuesday, seemingly getting through the session unscathed.
The message did not appear on any of Mahrez’s other social media accounts.
